International Cultural Pavilions Draw Significant Attention

If Shenzhen is a city connected to the world, the Shenzhen Buddhist Expo became a place where cultures from different civilizations met and engaged in meaningful dialogue.

International cultural pavilions attracted considerable attention throughout the exhibition, presenting visitors with a unique opportunity to experience diverse expressions of Buddhist culture and Eastern spirituality.

Nepal Pavilion Presents Himalayan Buddhist Heritage

The Nepal Pavilion was among the first international attractions to capture visitors’ attention.

Known worldwide as the “Land of Temples,” Nepal possesses a rich Buddhist cultural heritage. The pavilion brought traditional Buddhist cultural products, handcrafted artworks, and religious artifacts from Nepal to Shenzhen.

Intricate craftsmanship, sacred artistic traditions, and distinctive Himalayan cultural elements offered visitors a glimpse into Nepal’s spiritual and cultural legacy.

Another major highlight was the Bhutan Cultural Pavilion, featuring exhibits from the Bhutan Culture Center and a collection of Bhutanese royal cultural artifacts.

Visitors entering the pavilion encountered a world shaped by Himalayan traditions, featuring sacred thangka paintings, crystal mandalas, Buddhist artworks, and traditional handicrafts.

The pavilion provided a unique window into Bhutan’s history, spirituality, artistic traditions, and cultural values.

Thousands of Lights Illuminate Shenzhen

One of the most visually striking cultural presentations was the Medicine Buddha Light Offering Mandala, jointly presented by the Bhutan Culture Center and Baizun Art Museum.

As thousands of lights were gradually illuminated, they merged into a magnificent sea of light, creating an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation.

Inspired by the Twelve Great Vows of Medicine Buddha, the installation combined artistic expression with spiritual symbolism, conveying wishes for health, peace, wisdom, and happiness.

The project became one of the most memorable cultural attractions of the exhibition.

Sharing the Philosophy of Happiness

Representatives from the Bhutanese cultural delegation also participated in a series of cultural exchange activities.

Among them was Huang Linqiao (Svara Devi), Chairperson of the Bhutan & China Foundation and International Ambassador of the Bhutan Crown Prince Foundation.

During cultural sharing sessions, Huang introduced Bhutan’s distinctive development philosophy and its internationally recognized concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH).

She emphasized that Bhutan places great importance on ecological protection, cultural preservation, social harmony, and spiritual well-being, viewing these elements as essential components of happiness.

According to Huang, Bhutan’s values of balance, harmony, and inner fulfillment share many common principles with traditional Eastern philosophies that emphasize harmony between humanity and nature.

She also discussed the Bhutan & China Foundation’s long-term support for educational, cultural, and humanitarian initiatives, including children’s welfare programs, scholarship projects, women’s assistance programs, and cultural exchange activities.

Speaking about education, Huang noted that Bhutan places strong emphasis not only on academic learning but also on personal character, emotional development, and spiritual growth.

She highlighted the “Happy House” program supported by the Gyalyum Charitable Trust, which provides care, education, and opportunities for children and vulnerable individuals, promoting confidence, hope, and positive social values.

Himalayan Meditation Experience

The Bhutan Pavilion also featured Himalayan meditation experiences and happiness culture sharing sessions.

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants explored traditional Himalayan meditation practices designed to cultivate inner peace, self-reflection, and mental balance.

These activities offered visitors a deeper understanding of Bhutan’s approach to personal well-being and spiritual development, adding another dimension to the exhibition’s international cultural exchange programs.

Digital Art Meets Zen Philosophy

Innovation and tradition converged through the immersive digital art installation Dependent Origination and Emptiness by digital sculptural artist Huang Yi.

Through light, digital imagery, and visual storytelling, the work interpreted Buddhist philosophical concepts in a contemporary artistic language, creating an immersive experience that connected ancient wisdom with modern technology.

Tea Culture and Zen Gatherings

Tea culture played a prominent role throughout the exhibition.

Industry Leaders Discuss the Future of Agarwood

During the first roundtable discussion, Dai Yu, President of the Xiaogang Incense Industry Union, introduced the latest developments regarding the World Agarwood Association (WAA) and the World Agarwood Industry Federation (WAIF).

He noted that both organizations have been established as international non-profit industry bodies dedicated to promoting global cooperation, cultural exchange, industry dialogue, brand development, and market expansion within the agarwood sector.

According to Dai, the preparatory committees of WAA and WAIF have been actively establishing contacts with agarwood associations, research institutions, and natural incense organizations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, with the goal of creating a globally representative platform for cooperation and communication within the agarwood industry.

He also outlined the development of two new e-commerce platforms: AgarwoodWorld.com, a Chinese-language marketplace designed primarily for the domestic Chinese market, and WorldAgarwood.com, an English-language marketplace developed for international consumers. Together, these initiatives aim to support the internationalization, branding, and digital transformation of the global agarwood industry while helping agarwood products, natural incense brands, and traditional incense culture reach broader international markets.

According to Dai, the future of the agarwood industry extends far beyond raw material trade and increasingly involves consumer products, international branding, e-commerce platforms, cultural exchange, digital commerce, and global market development.

Among the prominent industry figures participating in the exhibition was Zhou Tianming, President of the Guangzhou Agarwood Association.

Widely recognized for his contributions to agarwood research, authentication, education, and industry standardization, Zhou has spent more than three decades promoting Chinese incense culture.

He has participated in the development of national industry standards, authored influential publications, and helped train thousands of agarwood professionals across China.

His agarwood products and educational programs attracted significant interest from exhibition visitors.

Bringing Traditional Culture into Modern Life

In addition to professional exhibitions and industry forums, the organizers designed numerous public engagement activities.

Visitors participated in intangible heritage workshops, incense appreciation sessions, tea culture experiences, Zen-inspired cultural activities, and interactive educational programs.

Coinciding with International Children’s Day, the exhibition also hosted a special family-oriented cultural weekend, allowing young visitors to experience traditional crafts and cultural heritage through hands-on activities.

The organizers emphasized that traditional culture should not remain confined to museum displays or exhibition cases. Instead, it should become something people can experience, understand, and integrate into their daily lives.

Integrating Healthcare and Traditional Incense Culture

A public wellness program featuring intangible heritage agarwood moxibustion therapy attracted widespread participation.

Led by Dr. Teng Hongli, Cai Chengxiang, and Lu Xinyi, the program included demonstrations, health consultations, and free public experiences designed to introduce visitors to traditional wellness practices.

The activities reflected the growing integration of traditional Chinese medicine, agarwood culture, and contemporary wellness concepts.

A Platform Linking Culture and Industry

Throughout the four-day event, the exhibition successfully connected cultural preservation with industrial development, academic dialogue with commercial cooperation, and traditional heritage with contemporary innovation.

As a major international city within the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen provided an ideal platform for promoting cultural exchange, expanding industry cooperation, and showcasing the global relevance of Eastern civilization.
