Canadian Artist Ya Ren Exhibits Work in U.S. and Italy

TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2026 —Steven Zhao, International Arts News— Five works by Canadian artist Ya Ren have been shown, or are scheduled to appear, in exhibitions and international art projects in Genoa, New York, metropolitan Milan and Padua this year.

At the same time, Italy’s Fondazione Effetto Arte has published “REN YA — Edizione Monografica,” a monograph devoted to her work. The 24-page publication, assigned ISBN 979-12-82149-31-0, includes an Italian-language critical essay, an artist biography and images of 19 works.

Together, the exhibitions and monograph mark a significant year in Ren’s artistic development and international engagement, bringing her work into exhibition, publishing and cross-cultural settings in Europe and North America.

 ArteGenova Opens 2026 Exhibition Schedule

Ren’s 2026 international exhibition schedule began at ArteGenova, a modern and contemporary art fair held Feb. 13-15 at the Genoa Exhibition Center in Italy.

A formal invitation issued by Fondazione Effetto Arte confirmed Ren’s participation and the display of her work during the three-day fair.

The 2026 event marked the 20th edition of ArteGenova. It brought together modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, installation and video, providing a meeting place for artists, galleries, collectors and art audiences. Organizers said the fair attracted about 20,000 visitors.

The Genoa presentation placed Ren’s work within a European professional art setting alongside artists from different countries and artistic traditions.

Her work is rooted in Chinese painting but does not remain within the established conventions of traditional flower-and-bird or landscape painting. She combines Chinese brushwork, atmosphere and an attention to nature with contemporary color, composition and spatial structure.

“Artisti ’26” Presented in New York

Ren’s work was also included in the “Artisti ’26” international art yearbook and presentation project organized by Fondazione Effetto Arte.

The project was formally presented April 11 at the Museum of Arts and Design, or MAD, in New York. Selected works and participating artists were introduced as part of the event.

The New York program combined art publishing with international presentation. It was a Fondazione Effetto Arte yearbook event held at the museum, rather than a solo exhibition organized by MAD.

Ren’s paintings feature flowers, birds, lakes, forests and seasonal landscapes. Their imagery reflects an Eastern sensitivity to nature, while their layered blues, greens, pinks, oranges and reds create a contemporary sense of rhythm and structure.

In the paintings, color is not simply decorative. It establishes movement, depth and emotional atmosphere, placing recognizable natural forms between observed landscape, memory and imagination.

“La Vita dell’Arte VI” in Metropolitan Milan

From April 4-11, Ren participated in “La Vita dell’Arte VI,” an international contemporary art exhibition held at Villa Venino in Novate Milanese, part of metropolitan Milan.

Curated by Pengpeng Wang, the exhibition brought together artists from Europe and Asia. Its central theme examined the relationship between art and life, including the ways contemporary art responds to personal experience, social conditions and cultural identity.

Artists of different generations and cultural backgrounds presented paintings and other forms of visual art in an exhibition designed to encourage cross-cultural exchange.

Villa Venino’s historic architecture provided a distinctive setting for contemporary work. Ren’s images of plants, birds, water and changing color entered into a visual dialogue with the building’s rooms, light and historical character.

Her work functioned not as an isolated symbol of Eastern culture but as part of a broader international conversation about tradition, contemporary practice and cultural experience.

ArtePadova Presentation Scheduled for November

Ren’s international schedule is set to continue in November at ArtePadova, a modern and contemporary art fair in Padua, Italy.

The 36th edition of ArtePadova is scheduled for Nov. 13-16 at PadovaFiere. Ren’s related presentation is scheduled for Nov. 14-16.

ArtePadova is an established Italian platform for galleries, artists, collectors, art institutions and the public. It presents recognized modern art while also providing space for contemporary artists and emerging visual approaches.

Across the Genoa, New York, Milan and Padua programs, five works by Ren have been presented or selected for presentation. They are being shown at different times and in different cultural settings rather than together in a single solo exhibition.

Italian Monograph Includes 19 Works

Fondazione Effetto Arte also published Ren’s monograph, “REN YA — Edizione Monografica,” in 2026.

The book was curated by Sandro Serradifalco. ART NOW Palermo was responsible for its graphic design and layout, and Priulla Print in Palermo printed the volume.

The monograph includes an artist biography, images of 19 works and an Italian-language critical essay titled “Il colore come dimora del tempo,” translated as “Color as the Dwelling Place of Time.”

The 19 works reproduced in the book are “Automne au château Frontenac,” “Blossom Shore,” “Colorburst,” “Cranes Where Dusk Meets Water,” “Crimison Leaves,” “Deep in Bloom,” “Dreaming Blossoms,” “Egrets in the Afterglow,” “Elora, in Autumn Remembered,” “Fall in the Rockies,” “Flowers in Time,” “Herons in Moonlit Marsh,” “Lotus at Dawn,” “Realm of Living Color,” “Rising Wings,” “Secret Lagoon in Bloom,” “Spring Stream Egrets,” “Spring Whispers” and “Verdant Glow.”

The works depict lotus ponds, flowers, birds, forests, mountains, historic architecture and Canadian landscapes. They reflect Ren’s foundation in Chinese flower-and-bird painting as well as her experience of North American landscapes, seasonal change and color.

The ISBN-designated monograph gives her work a lasting documentary form beyond temporary exhibitions. It preserves the paintings, critical interpretation and biographical material for continued circulation and study.

“Secret Lagoon in Bloom”

Among the works reproduced in the monograph is “Secret Lagoon in Bloom,” a painting that brings together flamingos, lotus ponds, tropical plants and flowers.

Blues, greens, pinks and oranges overlap across the surface, while birds, leaves and blossoms create a strong visual rhythm. The painting draws on nature without attempting to reproduce a specific landscape.

Instead, Ren reorganizes natural forms into a space between observation and imagination. The “secret lagoon” can be read less as a location on a map than as a psychological landscape shaped by memory, culture and emotion.

The work reflects her interest in Eastern approaches to nature while also demonstrating her use of contemporary color, composition and spatial relationships.

 Color, Time and Natural Imagery

The monograph’s critical essay describes the layered surfaces of Ren’s paintings as a negotiation between intention and openness, construction and movement.

According to the essay, layering becomes a “grammar of time.” Each new layer leaves a trace while partly concealing or reinterpreting what came before it.

Color operates as a structural element that organizes space, rhythm and emotion. Some colors appear to move toward the viewer, while others recede, creating an ambiguous space between flatness and depth.

The essay also identifies a tension between geometric order and organic growth. Architectural divisions and structured areas suggest control, while flowers, leaves, birds and water introduce movement and unpredictability.

Birds and flowers recur throughout Ren’s work. In Chinese painting, such subjects often carry meanings related to season, character, vitality and spiritual life. In Ren’s paintings, birds can also suggest migration, freedom, distance and movement between cultures.

Flowers introduce another sense of time through growth, blossoming and seasonal change. They often extend across the composition, creating the impression of life expanding beyond imposed boundaries.

A Practice Shaped by China and Canada

Ren has worked in Chinese painting for many years and has a strong foundation in traditional techniques.

According to the biography published in her monograph, she received ZSQ9000A national certification and the title of Chinese painting master in 2005 and is recognized in China as a nationally certified first-class artist.

She has served as a guest professor in CCTV’s “Art Masters” program and received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Canada.

Ren has lived and worked between China and Canada for more than 20 years. That experience has allowed her to combine the brushwork and atmospheric qualities of Chinese painting with the expansive landscapes and intense seasonal colors of North America.

Canadian forests, lakes, the Rocky Mountains, Quebec architecture and Ontario towns appear in her work alongside lotus flowers, birds and imagery associated with Chinese painting.

From 2016 to 2026, Ren held eight solo exhibitions in Canada. Her participation in the 2026 programs in Genoa, New York, metropolitan Milan and Padua builds on that sustained record of painting and exhibition.

Her work continues to explore how Chinese artistic traditions can be expressed through contemporary color and composition. The 2026 exhibitions and Italian monograph extend that exploration into a wider international context.
